In September, the faculty, staff and students of the Gallipolis Career College conducted graduation exercises for the Class of 2017 at the Dr. Samuel L. Bossard Memorial Library in Gallipolis. A crowd of nearly 200 people witnessed this year’s event.
William E. Plants, instructor of American History and Political Science at the college (as well as the 2014 Distinguished Service Award recipient from the college) began the ceremony with an invocation and led the audience in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Shirey Corporation President Robert Shirey then introduced the keynote speaker, Tom Gooch. Gooch addressed the crowd with the theme that the degree is the key, using his own life as an illustration of the point that the degree he earned in college eventually led him to other fields of employment. Thus, the degrees the students earned are their keys to open future doors to careers that they may not even anticipate.
At the conclusion of the address, Shirey Corporation Vice President Bo Shirey and Director of Education Karen Shaw distributed the degrees to the students. The members of the Class of 2017 are as follows: Katrina Atwood, Charlotte Burdette, Kim Bush, Sierra Conklin, Charles Davis, Deanne Derheim, Keith Gandee, Donna George, Angela Gibson, Nicole Johnson, Candace Long, Jerry Miller, Paula Miller, Jami Myers, Rebecca Matthew, Autumn Saunders, Michael Soles, Cassie Stone, Serina Stover, Laura Wells and Sarah Wray.
Plants concluded the ceremony with a benediction. A reception for the graduates followed under the direction of Shirey Corporation Chief Fiscal Officer Jenny Shirey.
