BEREA, Ky. — The University of Rio Grande women’s cross country team has been picked to finish fifth in the 2014 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll released Thursday.

The RedStorm received 44 points in the balloting of the league’s 10 coaches. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own squad.

Rio Grande, which will once again be under the director of veteran head coach Bob Willey, will open its schedule at home on September 27 when it hosts the annual Patty Forgey Invitational.

Brescia University, which won the 2013 KIAC crown, collected six first place votes and 78 total points to earn the top spot in the poll, while Asbury University - last year’s conference runner-up - garnerned the remaining four first place votes and 75 points for second place.

Point Park University (62 points), Indiana University-East (59) and Rio Grande rounded out the top five. Carlow University was sixth with 38 points and was followed by Indiana University-Kokomo (34), Midway College (24), Cincinnati Christian University (19) and Alice Lloyd College (18).

The 2014 cross country season will begin in late August and will conclude with the KIAC Championship on November 8th.
