HEMLOCK, Ohio — Back on track in a big way.
After losing their first game of the season last week the Southern football team returned to its winning ways in grand fashion Friday night, defeating Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Miller 60-0.
Tyler Barton got the Tornadoes (6-1, 4-1 TVC Hocking) on the board less than two minutes into the game with a one-yard touchdown run. Ryan Billingsley found the endzone from 14 yards out just 38 seconds later and Southern led 14-0 just 2:05 into play.
Tristen Wolfe hit Dennis Teaford for a eight yard touchdown at the 4:02 mark of the first quarter and Wolfe followed it up with a 36 yard touchdown pass to Tom Ramthun at the 11:52 mark of the second quarter. At the 5:56 mark of the second quarter Wolfe found the endzone on a 10 yard quarterback scramble and with time winding down in the half Paul Ramthun scored from 15 yards out. The Purple and Gold led 39-0 at halftime.
Southern freshman Jaylen Blanks returned the opening kick off of the second half 75 yards to the house to push the lead to 46-0. A pair of Kody Green touchdown runs, one from two yards out and the other from 30 yards out, sealing the 60-0 victory.
Wolfe was 3-of-5 passing for SHS with 61 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 44 yards on three attempts.
Tyler Barton had 116 yards and a score on 14 carries, Paul Ramthun had 74 yards and a score on five carries, Green had 37 yards and two scores on three carries, Trenton Deem ran once for 36 yards, Blanks had 26 yards on five carries and Billingsley marked 24 yards on four carries with a touchdown for Southern.
Deem was 6-of-9 on extra point kicks in the victory.
Southern finished the game with 374 rushing yards and 64 passing yards.
The Purple and Gold have now defeated Miller in three straight seasons.
Following Friday night’s games Southern is third in Region 25, .2 points ahead of fourth place Stubenville Central Catholic.
The Tornadoes will return to Racine next week for their homecoming game and a TVC Hocking bout with 2-5 Waterford. Miller will travel to face 3-4 Federal Hocking next Friday.
