Due to damage done to the Portsmouth Social Security Office by the storm of last Wednesday, the office was forced to close temporarily. The Portsmouth Social Security Office is located at 921 Fourth St., in Portsmouth.

Curtis DePuy, spokesman for the Portsmouth office said, “water from the storm damaged our local computer servers. No data was lost, as all information is stored in Baltimore, MD. The local servers allow us to access the mainframe in Baltimore. Our local phones are also routed through the servers. Replacement computer servers are expected to arrive Tuesday. It takes a couple days to get configure the servers and install all our software. The local office should be back in operation by Thursday or Friday of this week.”

As a result of the Portsmouth office temporarily closing, DePuy said, “local employees have been shifted to other area offices. If you had an appointment either by phone or in office you will be called by a Social Security Employee. Since the local work has been divided out among other offices, you may be called by an employee from another office.”

According to a profile on the Portsmouth office, “the Portsmouth office currently services 8,289 beneficiaries from Adams County and 21,727 beneficiaries from Scioto County. 6,550 individuals in Adams County receive retirement, survivors or disability benefits, the remaining 1,739 individuals receive SSI benefits. 5,257 individuals in Scioto County receive SSI payments, the other 16,470 individuals receive retirement, survivors or disability payments.

Total monthly payments from the Portsmouth office (Scioto and Adams Counties only) total $26,021,000 monthly. All Adams County beneficiaries receive a monthly total of $7,096,000. Scioto County beneficiaries receive a monthly total of $18,925,000. In Scioto County $2,857,000 monthly goes to SSI beneficiaries, with the remaining $16,068,000 going to retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries.

The Portsmouth office services Adams and Scioto Counties, but also handles walk in traffic from Jackson, Lawrence, and Pike counties in Ohio; and Greenup and Lewis Counties in Kentucky.” The current office staff consists of two managers, one administrative aide, and thirteen employees that are responsible for overseeing the retirement, survivors, disability, supplemental security income (SSI), and medicare programs.
